According to reports, Joseph Oloruntoju slumped after South African team scored their second goal and was immediately rushed to a private hospital and was confirmed dead afterwards.

The PRO of the 32 Artillery Brigade of Nigerian Army in Akure, Captain Ojo Adelegan confirmed the incident which he said Oloruntoju's blood pressure rose too high rapidly which finally lead to his untimely death.

The captain said:

“He is a retired sergeant. He has a shop at our mammy market (in the barracks). It was discovered that his blood pressure was overshot. It was while our doctors were saving his life that he gave up the ghost."
