In Osun State: A Man Was Sentenced To Death By Hanging For Stealing N3,420 From A Woman In Ilesa
It sounds funny though but it’s real as the Osun State High Court in Osogbo sentence a 40-years-old man, Kayode Adedeji to death by hanging for allegedly stealing a sum of N3,420 from a woman known as Omowuml Adebayo on April 25, 2009.
According to Elisabeth Alabi, the prosecuting counsel from the state ministry of justice, the defaulter who was arraigned before the court had attacked his victim, Omowumi Adebayo at her house in Ilesha with a knife at midnight on the day of the incident.
According to the prosecuting counsel, Elisabeth Alabi, she told the court that the suspect, Kayode Adedeji was Captured by some members of the OPC who kept watch over the woman’s area at that particular night.
When the suspect was tried by the court, he was released under granted bail but was re-arrested again after he committed another grievous offence which finally landed him in ilesa Prison at Ayeso.
The prosecuting counsel ruled that the suspect’s offence ran against the law and it is punishable under Section 11(2)(A) CAPR II, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004.
Kudirat Akano,who is the presiding judge was convinced that the suspect is guilty and ordered that he must be killed by hanging despite pleas by the defence counsel, Tunde Adedokun, for the court to be lenient and merciful in its judgment.
No date has been fixed for execution of the judgement.
